John Akard, Jr.


Born on January 13, 1966, in El Paso, Texas, John was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1994.  John is also admitted to practice before the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Southern and Northern Districts and Bankruptcy Courts of Texas.

John received his B.B.A. in Accounting from Texas A&M University in 1988.  He received his J.D. in 1994 from Texas Tech University where he graduated magna cum laude.

John is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Following law school, John worked for the Texas 14th District Court of Appeals as a briefing attorney to Justice Norman Lee. After his tenure with the Court of Appeals was completed, John was a founding member of the law firm Akard & Griffin.  In 1998, Akard & Griffin dissolved and John became of Counsel to the firm Mason, Coplen & Banks, P.C.

John is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Houston and American Bar Associations, the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants (AAA-CPA, and Solos Supporting Solos (and ad hoc organization of solo practitioners,  As a member of the Houston Bar Association, he has participated in the Golf and Library Committees and has served as Chair of the Library Committee.  As a very active member of the AAA-CPA, he served as a Board Member and President of the Texas Chapter.  He has also been nominated to join the Executive Committee of AAA-CPA.

In addition to the practice of law, John is an Independent Trustee of the Commonwealth International Series Trust which is made up of four (4) publicly traded mutual funds: Japan (CNJFX), Australia/New Zealand (CNZLX), Real Estate Securities (CNREX) and Global Funds (CNGLX) (  He serves as the Chair of the Funds Audit Committee and as its Financial Expert.

John’s principal areas of practice are Bankruptcy, Probate, Trusts and Estates, and Asset Protection.
